Medicaid & CHIP Plans

Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) plans provide health coverage for millions of low-income Americans, giving them access to quality health care. These plans cover low-income families, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and some individuals with disabilities.

CHRISTUS Health Plan offers Medicaid State of Texas Access Reform (STAR) and CHIP coverage to families and children in Texas that qualify. Coverage is based on your household income. If you think you might be eligible for coverage, you can review the Member Rights and Responsibilities and apply now to find out. Members pick a Primary Care Provider (PCP) from our large list of providers. You can pick a different Primary Care Provider for each covered member in your family. Your PCP will provide routine and preventative care. If needed, your PCP will refer you to a specialist or coordinate pre-certification for care. The following services do not require a referral and can be used directly:

  • Behavioral Health Services (Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Abuse)
  • Texas Health Steps (Medical and Dental Check-Ups from Birth Through Age 20)
  • Obstetrician/Gynecologist (Ob/Gyn) Care

Members can access Members Services during business hours. If you have an emergency or crisis and need treatment right away go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. You or someone on your behalf will need to call CHRISTUS and tell us you had an emergency.

Behavioral Health Service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Emergency or Crisis

If a member is in crisis they can call the crisis line at 1-800-323-0286; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.The member can also call 911 if the emergency is life threatening or if they are in danger.

Availability of Languages

Both the BHUM and crisis line have bilingual interpreters on staff to assist in translations to members.

Interpreter services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Substance Abuse Services

Members are able to self-refer by calling 1-800-323-0208. The same number (1-800-323-0208) can be used for members needing assistance with substance abuse services.

Availability of Service Coordination

Members can call 1-800-446-1730 (Medical Management) and a member of the Medical Management team will speak to the member regarding their specific needs. If the service coordination is specific to behavioral health and substance abuse, the Medical Management team member will do a warm transfer to Health Integrated.

24-Hour Nurse Hotline

Members can call 844-581-3173 for the Nurse Line.

Hours of Operation

The Nurse Line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The nurse can help members with questions or help members decide what to do about their health needs.

Information Available

The purpose of the 24-hour Nurse Line is to inform members of value-added benefits. When you join CHRISTUS Health Plan, you get value-added services and extra benefits that Medicaid does not provide.

24/7 Nurse Line (844-581-3173) – You can talk to a nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The nurse can help you with questions or help you decide what to do about your health needs. Call your doctor first with any questions or concerns about your health care needs.

PROMISE Program – This program offers a package of diapers ($50 value) at no cost when a pregnant member completes 10 prenatal and one postpartum visit to the doctor.

Sports Physical Exam – Members 19 years and younger can get one sports physical exam per year. This is a different exam from the Texas Health Steps checkup.

Smoking Cessation Program – This is a program for members age 12 years or older who would like help to quit smoking. It includes an assessment and counseling. Members 18 years of age and older can receive nicotine replacement products with a prescription from your primary care provider.

Contact Lenses Program – This benefit is for members between the ages of 12 and 18 years. It includes a fitting exam, with additional benefits to be applied toward the purchase of contact lenses to correct vision.

Home Visits – This program offers home visits to high-risk pregnant members who are actively enrolled in care management.

Home Environmental Assessments – This program offers home assessments to members who are actively enrolled in care or disease management programs and have asthma or other chronic diseases.

Free Member Newsletter – You will get a newsletter in the mail with information on topics to help you and your family stay healthy.

Texas Medicaid has a contractor (Maximus) whose job it is to help consumers pick among their options. They can also help when a consumer wants to change health plans. Information Available

If you disagree with a CHRISTUS Health Plan decision, you have the right to ask for a Medicaid fair hearing from the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). A CHRISTUS Representative can help you file a fair hearing. Please call within ninety (90) days after the order or action you disagree with occurs. Member Advisory Group Overview

CHRISTUS Health Plan offers a Member Advisory Group where members can discuss topics with us such as provider selection, range of services and CHRISTUS Health Plan sponsored events. All members are invited to join the Member Advisory Group and receive invitations for each meeting.
