CHIP/CHIP Perinate Newborn/CHIP Perinate

What is CHIP?

CHIP is a state sponsored health care program for the children under age 19 of families who make too much money for Medicaid, but cannot afford health care for their children. Benefits are provided in your area by CHRISTUS Health Plan. When a child is enrolled into CHIP, a parent/legal guardian may select CHRISTUS Health Plan.

Call 1-800-359-5613 for more information about the CHRISTUS Health Plan CHIP program.

To apply for CHIP, call 1-877-543-7669 or go online to www.chipmedicaid.org.

Eligibility Requirements

Families don’t need to determine whether they qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Once an application is submitted, the state will review the information to see which program applies.

What is CHIP Perinate Newborn?

CHIP Perinate Newborn is coverage for the child of a CHIP Perinate mom. Once born, the child will receive benefits that are similar to the traditional CHIP benefits for the duration of the 12-month coverage period. After this time, the child may be eligible for the CHIP program or Medicaid.

CHIP Perinate

CHIP Perinate provides limited coverage for unborn children if women are:

  • Not Medicaid eligible
  • Have an income under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)
